Women are disengaging from traditional social media. Why?

New research from Uplevyl uncovers the growing concerns around misinformation, trust, safety, and content quality—issues that are pushing women away from traditional social platforms. At the same time, the need for meaningful connection, mentorship, and professional growth remains stronger than ever.

Shubhi Rao, Jacki Zehner, and Rebekah Tromble break down the findings from this eye-opening study, explore the hidden costs of social media’s current business model, and discuss what a better digital future could look like.

Rebekah Tromble, Director of the Institute for Data, Democracy & Politics at George Washington University, offered insights into how these challenges impact expert voices—particularly women’s—and what’s at stake when they disappear from online spaces.

This conversation examined the exodus from traditional platforms, the trust gap across different networks, and why women are willing to pay for safer, purpose-driven alternatives. We also introduced UP by Uplevyl, a reimagined digital space designed to meet the evolving needs of women.

The data is clear. The time for change is now. Let’s talk about what’s next.
