Our conversation with Barbara included topics like the 7 common pitfalls for women in business, the power of authenticity, and how to build your credibility and personal networks. And while we can all level up our knowledge and skills, we also recognize that many organizations are not working for women. Health is Wealth

We were honored to host Chantel Chapman, Founder of Trauma of Money™ for an event catered to finance and health professionals.

Financial trauma takes many forms. Understanding what it is and how it may present in clients can lead to greater levels of financial engagement and wellbeing.

So much time and effort is spent on advancing financial ‘literacy’, and yet multiple surveys indicate that the majority of American adults are not only financially illiterate, but experience challenging money disorders including financial avoidance, overspending, excessive risk taking, risk aversion, and financial fawning. While open to all, this session was geared towards financial services professionals, and professionals working in the mental-health and wellness arenas.

Compassionate takeaways include:

  • Recognizing different money narratives that shape behaviors and relationships with money.

  • Exploring common money disorders and the approaches that disempower them.

  • Understanding why unhealed trauma can be a barrier to financial literacy.

  • Using somatic experiencing, nervous system awareness, and neuroanatomy to help clients find ‘windows of resilience’.

SheMoney and Zions Bank were thrilled that we got to host Chantel Chapman, the founder of Trauma of Money™, for her first visit to Utah.

Trauma of Money™ (TOM) is a unique financial literacy and psychoeducation program that brings together the psychology of scarcity and the fundamentals of trauma to help us understand and evolve how we relate to money. Discover nurturing frameworks that put financial healing before financial literacy for more effective, engaging financial experiences.

  • Financial Trauma and the Brain

  • Common Money Disorders

  • Trauma of Money Method’s 6-layer Model of Healing

This session was hosted by SheMoney & Trauma of Money™ (TOM) founder, Chantel Chapman, a spacious, focused discussion that explored how trauma impacts the mind, and, in turn, our relationships with money and financial wealth.

Pathways to Capital: Navigating the Capital Landscape for Startups & Small Businesses

MISSED THE EVENT? CHECK OUT OUR FUNDING RESOURCE GUIDE

Whether you’re a solopreneur, small business owner or building the next unicorn, it takes money to build a business! Understanding how to best finance your business is one of the most critical parts of your journey to success. And it can also be one of the most overwhelming and daunting. SheMoney, Kinect Capital and Womenpreneurs as well as expert guest speakers had an interactive workshop designed to:

  • Learn more about the capital landscape and the possibilities that exist for all types of businesses, whether you’re a one-woman-shop or on a mission to scale.

  • Identify the type of capital that’s appropriate for your startup or small business at your current stage of growth.

  • Deep dive into that category of funding to make sure you know how/where to access it, what’s required during the process, and the next steps you’ll likely need to take.

Each breakout session was led by subject matter expert(s) and included an overview of key terms, important considerations, and tangible next steps to pursuing that financing option.

  • Equity Financing

  • Debt Financing

  • Alternative Financing

  • Grants & Non-Dilutive Financing

Breakout Session Details:

Equity Financing - Session Leads: Tara Spalding & Kimmy Paluch
Equity investment, a way for a business to raise funds by selling ownership in the company to investors, is one of the most widely discussed funding options for startups. But what’s not talked about as often are the various types of equity investment and the nuances and essential considerations behind each. To help make sense of it all, our experts will provide an overview of the basics of equity financing for startups, including different types of equity funding (think Angel investment and venture capital investment), how they work, and what entrepreneurs need to know to navigate the process effectively.

Debt Financing - Session Lead: Stef Sample & Waruni Murphy
Debt financing has long been a go-to for funding businesses. And now, more credit products are available to small businesses and startups than ever before, from traditional bank loans and lines of credit to new peer-to-peer lending platforms. But understanding which are a fit for your business and how to access them can feel overwhelming. Breakout session experts will walk us through the many options available, as well as important considerations to take into account, from fees and repayment terms to the relationship between personal credit and your business.

Alternative Financing - Session Lead: Kirsten Horning & Spence Thunell
Not every business is a fit for more traditional forms of debt and equity financing. And other businesses may want to explore additional, and often more flexible, options to add to their funding mix. Whatever the reason, alternative financing can be a great way to grow your business instead of, or alongside, a bank loan or investment from a traditional VC. We’ll dive into several options, including crowdfunding and revenue-based financing, to better understand the exciting opportunities outside the conventional equity and debt landscape.

Grants & Non-Dilutive Financing - Session Lead: Cleopatra Louise
Non-dilutive financing is a broad category that covers any funding you get without giving away any ownership of your company. For this breakout session, we’re zeroing in on the types of non-dilutive financing that come at no cost. We’ll talk about all the creative ways that business owners can access funds or resources (i.e., business services) that don’t require giving away ownership, have no fees, and don’t require repayment, from private grants to federal grants, uncovering untapped revenue sources, and more.

In addition to the breakout sessions, we had bites, sips, and the opportunity to connect with other founders and business owners!

Money as a Movement

We were so thrilled to host Tracy Gray, founder of The 22 Fund, and Gayle Jennings O'Byrne, founder of the WOCstar Fund! We learned more about how they are activating women’s financial power for change through The Ally Capital Collab, an initiative they created to channel more investment to VC funds led by Black and Brown women.

“The marches and protests may have stopped, but the work hasn’t.”

Just 0.6% of all VC funding goes to Black or Latinx women-led companies. Not only does this illustrate the staggering inequities of our financial systems, but it also represents a massive missed economic opportunity: the US GDP has lost over $500 billion by not investing in Black women, and a total of $16 TRILLION because of systemic racism.

To address this gap, Tracy and Gayle are reimagining access to capital by creating more visibility and support for and, ultimately, investment into funds that are specifically designed to invest in these overlooked and underestimated founders.

Thank you for all those who explored the power of activating women and galvanizing our finances to create change with us!
